Choosing a College
The most important decision in ones life
Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions in a person's life, given the importance of college education. It needs to be made with utmost care and diligence. The process of choosing a college can take up to two years so it should be begun well in time. Also proper professional advice should be sought if need be.
College education involves specialization into majors and minors. Different colleges excel in different disciplines and hence it helps to know in which direction one is headed career wise so that one can choose an appropriate college. If one is undecided then career assessment tests should be given so that one can get an idea of ones aptitude and can choose accordingly. Most countries have an accreditation system that ranks colleges. It would be foolish to choose a college without considering its accreditation.
There are several other factors that differentiate colleges, the importance of which depends on the individual. Some of these are day college/boarding, urban/rural, placement record, faculty student ratio, extra curricular activities and diversity of student body. The important criteria should be listed out and a holistic assessment of the appropriateness of the college arrived at. If possible the colleges should be visited so that one can talk to students studying there for a first-hand feel.
Colleges have minimum entry expectations such as high school grades, results of common tests such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test and participation in extracurricular, sports and social activities. These should be ascertained from the college brochures or college web sites and the college short listed only if their minimum requirements are met.
Perhaps the most important criterion is the tuition and other costs. The total costs should be assessed and the options are available from the college in the form of scholarships, loans and on campus assignments ascertained. It is essential to ensure that ones family can meet the balance requirement.
Colleges usually decide on the basis of comprehensive application forms. These should be filled with care. It may be the most important form one fills. |
