Online University

The online university has come to stay.

The online university is gaining popularity. The evolution of the Internet technology with instantaneous transmission, electronic data storage and worldwide connectivity has powered the proliferation of the online university. Its major advantage is that the need to be physically present on the university campus is done away with. It therefore also allows for a flexible study schedule. It is popular with people who are already working, but need the additional university degree to enhance their employment potential. They cannot leave their jobs and would be uncomfortable in the physical presence of much younger students.

There are two types of online universities. One is that which offers online education along with on campus education and the other is that which offers only online education. The former has several benefits. It already has a mechanism for the systematic delivery of education. Course content is finalized in advance and a week wise schedule prepared. Exercises and supplementary material for each lecture is decided before the course commences. Transcripts of the lectures themselves are available in many cases. The mechanisms for evaluation are also known beforehand. Such meticulous preparation has made it very simple to adapt the material in a format required for online courses. In fact the online product requires practically no additional cost or effort. In purely online universities the entire cost of preparation of the course falls on the online course, thereby making it more expensive.

The second issue is that of credibility. The universities that offer campus education as well already have a reputation, many of more than a hundred years, which automatically gets transferred to their online education services. Only online universities require fresh accreditation and have to build their reputation from scratch. This has been made somewhat difficult by the dubious practices of some online universities, who issue degrees without adequately imparting the education or assessing the student.

Whether purely online or combined with on campus, the online university has come to stay.
