K-12 Civil Rights Investigator Two builds upon the foundational investigation concepts covered in Investigator One to provide a deeper understanding of investigation techniques to include interviewing skills, questioning skills, trauma-informed interviewing, credibility assessments, analyzing consent, and post-interview tasks. Through the use of a case study, attendees will engage in an issue spotting exercise to help apply the concepts required to identify Title IX-related issues and develop an investigation strategy. In addition, the course will provide a framework Investigators can be used to draft comprehensive investigation reports.
After completing this course, participants will be able to…
- Prepare appropriate interview questions for complainants, respondents, and witnesses
- Describe the five elements to consider when assessing credibility
- Sort evidence into three categories: relevant, directly related, and not relevant or directly related
- Develop questions to illicit information necessary for a decision-maker to determine if consent was present during an incident
- Demonstrate a trauma-informed approach to interviewing
- Explain what happens after concluding the investigation stage of the formal grievance process
