Mandy Hambleton, M.S. (Senior Director, Content Development, TNG; Vice President, ATIXA): Institutions need to have a set process and they need to document what they’re doing. So, anytime an accommodation request comes in, they need to document that it came in, what the response was, and any actions that were taken, including what correspondence was given to the individual who made the request. Then, we also want individuals to know that if it’s not working or needs to be modified in some way, there’s also an option to revisit that conversation and make that modification.

Makenzie Schiemann, M.S., Ph.D. (Partner, TNG; President, NABITA): Schools, programs, and departments should consider this intentionally before somebody needs an accommodation. This process should be documented in their own policies and procedures, and the right people in the room should be gathered to discuss what it would be like to make these accommodations. That way, they have a plan for implementing some of this before the first request comes in.

Mandy Hambleton, M.S. (Senior Director, Content Development, TNG; Vice President, ATIXA): When we think about the Title IX process, a lot of very specific things need to be done to comply with the regulations. There are timelines and specific correspondence pieces that need to go out. There are different types of meetings or hearings, so it’s important to consider what accommodation would look like for each stage, depending on what an individual might need. Then what would we do to ensure that those accommodations can be provided?
